MTT Course Descriptions and Text Books
Primary Texts: Texts are available for purchase at the training center and used editions may be available.
Course #1103 Intro to HVAC/Trade Tools Refrigeration & A/C An introduction to the general requirements for human comfort in buildings, as well as heating fundamentals, types and designs of furnaces, along with procedures for servicing and installing. Trade tools includes the selection, inspection, use and maintenance of tools used in the HVAC trade. Recommended prior to tool purchase.
Course #1105 HVAC Mathematics Practical Problems in Math Students review and build on basic math skills by analyzing and solving HVAC trade math problems using standard formulas utilized in the trade. Involves calculating area, volume, weights, angles, pressure, vacuum and temperature.
Course #1102 HVAC Safety & Rigging (No text) (Preparation for Industrial First Aid and CPR Certifications) Offers awareness of safety rules, procedures, equipment and safe rigging techniques necessary for working on construction job sites and in a confined space. Testing for the Industrial Safety Card (meets OSHA requirements) and CPR training is included.
Course #3401 Cooling Series Refrigeration & A/C Covers mechanical refrigeration cycle and basic cooling principles; examines function of refrigeration components and psychometric charts and application of pressure/temperature charts. Includes tubing fabrication and brazing, evacuation procedures, use of manifold gauges and system analysis, wiring diagrams, refrigerant piping and refrigerants to troubleshooting residential cooling systems.
Course #3406 Refrigerant Certification Refrigeration Transition Manual (EPA Required Refrigerant Certification) Covers the types, physical properties, and applications of refrigerants and EPA specifications
Course #1209 Electricity Series Electricity for Refrigeration, Heat, A/C Covers Ohm’s Law and concepts of AC electrical circuits. Solid state, electromechanical, and pneumatic controls. Reading and tracing wiring diagrams and schematics.
Course #1210 Electrical Heat Electricity for Refrigeration, Heat, A/C Covers the basic operation of an electric furnace, controls and components. Information provided for measuring resistance. Includes a sequence of operations for a typical heating unit and troubleshooting electrical circuits and furnaces.
Course #3407 Heat Pumps/ Alternative Energy Refrigeration & A/C Covers the principles of reverse cycle heating and cooling. Identifies the uses, types and components along with procedures for maintenance, troubleshooting, and service. Applications and installation of air-to-air, ground-source and water-source heat pumps, refrigerant flow controls, reversing valves, defrost cycle controls and indoor air distribution design. Also includes theory of alterative energy sources in the fuel cell technology, geothermal energy, ground source, water source and air source heat pumps, active and passive solar system design, wind energy, and water energy.
Course #0150 Gas Codes and Installation International Fuel Gas Codes Text (Gas Fitter’s License Course) Prepares the student for the City of Spokane Heating Mechanics I test. Covers HVAC gas piping and appliance installation codes and safety issues. The dual focus of proper sizing and installation of gas piping along with sizing and installation for venting of fuel burning appliances. Covers appliances with gas pressures not in excess of ½psig and under 400,000 BTU inputs. Fees for city test, if desired, are not included with tuition.
Course #2250 Gas Service & Troubleshooting Gas Codes & Standards A step-by step approach to analyzing and diagnosing problems in gas furnaces. An overview of the combustion process, ignition systems, fuel gases and skills necessary to service residential gas heating equipment and appliances. Extensive hands-on is included to familiarize students with troubleshooting techniques and processes. Prerequisites: Electricity Series & Gas Codes & Installation is required.
Course #2305 Boilers (Residential) Gas Codes & Standards Book, Refrig. & A/C An introductory course in hydronic heating systems. Includes: operations, components, types of fluid systems, installation, servicing, inspections and seasonal maintenance. Prerequisites: Electricity Series and Gas Service or authorization of instructor.
Course #2113 Business Skills Business Management An overview of the business environment including licensing, taxes, insurance, inventory, and other overhead costs. Also includes resume writing software; presentation skills and customer relationships; business accounting, including reading and understanding profit and loss statements and balance sheets; business management concerns including staffing, employee relationships and making a profit. The creation of a “mock” company helps explain the dynamics of small business operations and decision making processes.
Course #0151 Basic Oil and Codes Residential Oil Burners, Gas Codes & Standards (Preparation for Oil Burner’s License) Prepares students for the Oil Burner Installer and Service License exam proctored by the City of Spokane. Covers oil burner design, combustion chambers and efficiency. The codes for installation of tank piping and oil heating equipment are discussed in detail. Includes an introduction to troubleshooting and servicing. Familiarization with the oil burner and furnace parts and operations are included in the hands-on portion of the class. Fees for city test, if desired, are not included with tuition.
Course #2218 Oil Service, Advanced Residential Oil Burners Troubleshooting and maintenance procedures for selected oil heating units. Development of a troubleshooting chart; proper use of tools and equipment; inspection and repair of combustion chambers; system burner and control system servicing. Students must hold a current oil license to attend this class. Prerequisites: Electricity Series and Basic Oil Codes
Course #3214 HVAC Accessories Refrigeration & A/C Covers the installation and operation of automatic vent dampers, electronic control systems, humidifiers and filters. Emphasis on the use of these accessories as energy saving devices and indoor air quality issues. Troubleshooting and maintenance procedures for selected zone control systems and economizers, water tanks, setback controls and electronic air cleaners.
Course #3226 HVAC System Design/ Air Properties & Blueprints Air Duct Calculator, Manuals D & J Provides an elementary understanding of air and its properties as a background for consideration of heat loss and gain calculation and proper duct sizing procedures using Manuals D and J and/ or manuals of equivalent procedures. Specific topics are heat transfer modes, conductivity, temperature differences, ventilation, and factors in duct design. Use of duct calculators and their application to specific building design problems are included in the hands-on portion. Includes blueprint information found on site plans, plan views, sectional and detail drawings.
